We had great intentions of getting up this morning and start sight seeing again. However, jet-lag set in and we all over slept by 2 hours. Oh well. We started our day today by going to see the Gendarmenmarkt. This was a beautiful square with three large buildings, one of which was a national theater. We then ate a Bavarian restaurant where we had sausage and fried potatoes. So delicious!
After our lunch we made our way to "Checkpoint Charlie." This was one of the checkpoints that the US had while the Berlin wall was up. If someone wanted to cross from the west to the east side, they would have to go through a similar checkpoint.
After our visit here, we headed out to the east side of Berlin. We first saw the Oberbaum Bridge. Across the bridge was the largest portion of the Berlin wall still standing. In the pictures below, you can see the space that was left in between the two walls when they were built.
After our journey in the east side of Berlin, we took the U-Bahn back to the west side and tried to find a famous old church called the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtniskirche. However, after looking for 10 minutes, we realized that the church had been right in front of us the whole time. It is currently under restoration. So we were only able to see some of the church. It was beautiful!
It is so gorgeous and relaxing here. We have all our windows and doors open to our porches letting in the nice breeze outside and the sounds of birds chirping and rain. How wonderful! We are so lucky to have a chance to do much exploration! Enjoy the pictures!!!
Guten Tag!
